Mortreich's Black Knights WIP pt.3

warhammer black knights

For my Black Knights standard bearer I wanted to use the classic skeleton horseman (I believe from 1993.) which I had sitting in my collection for quite some time. After some thinking I gathered the bits I needed for the project. For the hand holding the banner pole I used the one from the 90's Black Knights Command group blister. Flag is from the Death Upgrade Kit from Games Workshop.

On the horseman I had to cut off the arm, and on the banner pole the blade and the scull. I also had to remove all the rivets from the pole. Once I removed all unwanted parts I assembled the model. I left the banner unglued so I can paint the model easier.

The new arm fitted perfectly onto the body. I didn't even have to use the modelling putty. Once I had it assembled it was time to bring him to un-life with some colors. :)

After I finished painting I realized that the banner is causing the model not to fit into the unit. I resolved this by heating the lower part of the banner (since it is made in resin) with a hairdryer and banding it backwards. This way not only was I able to fit the bearer into the unit, but also the flag looks more natural, like it is waving against the wind. With the Standard Bearer done, the first rank of my massive unit of black knights is completed!

I think that the whole unit of 24 knights will be really a sight to see! 🧛

Project Log: Altburg - Townhouse I, Part 13

tabletop world

The moment has finally come to paint the house! :) I've been looking forward to it for quite some time. I finished the ground floor and I'm pleased how it turned out. I decided to do color variations between the stones a bit more subtle than usual. For some reason it looks more urban to me and thus fits better to the townhouse. I also didn't want to overdo with vegetation, for the same reason (which wasn't easy) :).

The ground floor is still missing all the details, like lanterns, doors, sign, shutters, etc.

Mortreich's Black Knights WIP pt.2

I finally got around to paint some of my undead minis, after finishing with the Midgard house project (although I still have to paint it). The project took me a couple of months to finish and during that time I haven't painted any miniatures. So working on my Mortreich's Black Knights again was a real joy. I completed another three, including the champion and musician. Now I have 7 out of 24 done.

Project Log: Altburg - Townhouse I, Part 12

And at last, after several months of work, here is the finished house in all it's glory! I deserve a beer. 🍺 :) It was supposed to be a personal project initially, but I later decided it would be a shame not to put it into production and make it available. This was a long journey but I am really happy how the model turned out.

So here are the photos of final model cast in resin. It is available at Tabletop World.

Now I have to bring it to life with some paints! I think I'm really going to enjoy painting it. :)

Project Log: Altburg - Townhouse I, Part 11

After finishing the plaster on all of the walls, which took my a while, I am now doing final tedious work...putting the shingles on the roof and filling gaps with green stuff. After that I have a couple of hundred rivets to do. 😅

I should be done with all the work by tomorrow and have it cast in resin on Friday. Can't wait to see the final product. 😁

Brother Gumbert

This goodhearted monk is an Altburg graveyard church resident. One can imagine him slicing his matured Cheddar complimented with a nice cup of wine. :) The mini is totally different from the dark characters I'm used to paint and it was lot of fun. :D Townsfolk run to this little guy to seek refuge when Vampire Counts are approaching. 🧛

The miniature as well as the scenery is from Tabletop World.
To see how I painted the stone walls and flagstone floor on this Graveyard you can check out my tutorial on how I paint stone.

Project Log: Altburg - Townhouse I, Part 10

With the work I have done on the roof the house is starting to get the final shape. I also started to build a stone chimney and added details to the left side of the house. Soon I will be adding plaster to the walls, rivets to the beams and planks, and shingles to the roof. I also plan to add some windows to the roof but I didn't came up with satisfying design yet.

Arachtian

Necromancer and master of dark arts known only as Arachtian was infamous throughout the old world. His frequent appearances within the cities of the Empire made him one of the most wanted man. Elector counts employed the toughest witch hunters to hunt him down. Rewards on his head were spiraling. He was never seen in one place for too long. He was constantly on the move escaping various holy groups, mercenaries and witch hunters.

Upon his arrival to Sylvania, his path crossed with one of the most vicious vampires known to man, vampire Kain. This hateful vampire lord saw a great potential in this corrupted and foul man, who already had a great knowledge of dark magic. Kain realized immediately that he would be of great assistance to the New Night Order since his abilities to rapidly raise big groups of undead servants were unparalleled. His nomadic lifestyle had a specific purpose. Everywhere he traveled, he was in search of potent artifacts and forbidden books. Most valuable items in his collection were ancient artefacts and tomes from the deserts of the old. These unholy scripts gave him unique insights into arcane dark science which was long gone and forgotten. In one of his experiments and rituals he apparently succeeded in creating a levitating dead host, a living corpse like zombie only faster and stronger. This of course is yet to be confirmed on the battlefield but it is no wonder that commander Kain wants him by his side.

The news of his involvement with Kain spread throughout the Empire and caused fear and concern among men. The word is that he is working day and night on raising the new breed of undead warriors that shall serve the New Night Order. If this turns out to be more than a tavern rumor, may Sigmar help us!

The model I have used for Arachtian character is a Necromancer miniature from Scibor Miniatures. This is the first non GW character in my collection. I really love this model and it fits perfectly with GamesWorkshop miniatures. The size is spot on. To read more about this mini and for some WIP pictures follow the link to this post.
